New Radio Services

There is a clear shift in radio. Services such as Pandora, Last.fm, Mecora and Yahoo are launching in Europe. These services provide varying degrees of interactivity but all with the clear goal of providing people with more music they prefer. Record Labels should aim to license these services according to their interactivity, their ‘listener-to-purchaser’ conversion ratio and their revenue models. Coming soon is SnapTune.com, software which allows you to record radio programmes, identify tracks, store and playback individual songs on your PC and purchase singles and albums. It remains to be seen how this will be licensed but clearly, the new services blur the distinction between ‘radio’ and ‘retail’ and is one which is going to provide a challenge to Business Affairs, but endless possibilities for music fans.
